When Michal Mahgerefteh wanted to lose weight, she tried diet and exercise.

However, when she added hypnotherapy to her regiment, the pounds started to melt away.

“The way I ate was connected to an emotional state,” Mahgerefteh said. “I learned to control my bad habits and listen to my body.”

The Norfolk resident went to Life by Design in Virginia Beach and saw Lisa Smith for her hypnotherapy sessions. About 10 months later, Mahgerefteh was 25 pounds lighter and down two dress sizes.

“The weight came off,” she said, “and I have been able to keep it off.”

On Jan. 4 , Smith celebrated the fourth annual World Hypnotism Day at the Virginia Beach Central Library by holding an all-day event. Participants could take free hourly classes and self- hypnosis instruction. World Hypnotism Day was celebrated in 22 nations last year.

“This event, as part of World Hypnotism Day, is aimed at separating fact from fiction and creating an understanding and experience of hypnotism, ” Smith said.

Hypnotism has so many beneficial applications, including helping people improve their mental and physical well-being, she added.

During one of the sessions, Smith led guests t hrough guided imagery, which included finding a lemon, cutting it up , and smelling and tasting it. The exercise showed how the body responds to thoughts, and in some cases, as if they were really happening.

“It isn’t a race, and it isn’t about being the best at it,” Smith said about hypnosis. “It’s about finding what works for you.”

Smith also covered self-hypnosis techniques such as eye fixation, counting backward, tension and relaxation, mental vacations and progressive relaxation.

“It’s really a way to connect your mind, body and soul,” said Mahgerefteh, 46. “Overall, I learned to make better choices with my life.”

Smith said people can use hypnosis in myriad ways, including help in losing weight, quitting smoking, achieving goals or even improving your golf game. Other uses include preparing for surgery and improving sleep.

One of the highlights of Charlotte Pernik’s life was being featured on the NBC “Today Show,” and what made it extra special was that she was joined by her son, Jay, and several of her daughters.

While visiting New York City years earlier with her husband, Frank, who passed away in 1996, Pernik had taken a photo of the “Today Show” mascot, J. Fred Muggs, a live monkey used to liven up the program.

“Jay dug out the old photo, and I sent it in when the Today show was celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2002 and wanted anything anybody had from the beginning of the program,” Pernik said
